Chinese Theater Collaborative

Chinese Theater Collaborative Project Team

In its current phase, this project is primarily a collaboration between faculty, graduate students, and staff affiliated with four units at The Ohio State University (OSU), namely, the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature (DEALL), the Department of Design, the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) and the University Libraries. We have begun to expand beyond OSU and hope to grow the roster of our contributors from around the world.

The idea for the project was originally developed by Prof. Patricia Sieber (DEALL, The Ohio State University), the lead editor of How To Read Chinese Drama: A Guided Anthology (Columbia University, 2022) and co-editor of How To Read Chinese Drama in Chinese: A Language Companion (Columbia University Press, 2023) in conversations with Zong-qi Cai (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and Lingnan University), Regina Llamas (IE University, Spain), Leigh Bonds (The Ohio State University Libraries), Maria Scheid (The Ohio State University Libraries), and Marjorie Chan (DEALL, The Ohio State University).

For content generation, the current project leads are Prof. Patricia Sieber (DEALL, The Ohio State University) and Dr. Julia Keblinska (East Asian Studies Center, The Ohio State University). They have complementary expertise. Dr. Keblinska specializes in modern film and media studies, whereas Dr. Sieber has written on the print culture and canon formation surrounding Yuan-dynasty song-drama and song culture.

For the Digital Humanities aspect of the project, the project has benefited from the expertise of Prof. Leigh Bonds (The Ohio State University Libraries). For the site development, the team  led by Prof. Maria Palazzi (Department of Design, The Ohio State University) with the assistance of Taylor Olsen (MFA, Department of Design), Emma Peters (BS student, Department of Design), and preliminary visual concepts by Gabriela Miniello (MFA student, Department of Design).

In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of Chinese theater and its multi-media afterlives, CTC is advised by an interdisciplinary group of scholars from around the world.
