INTRODUCTION


The Peony Pavilion (Ch. 牡丹亭 Mudan ting), also known as The Return of Soul (Ch. 還魂記 Huanhun ji), is a Ming dynasty play written by Tang Xianzu 湯顯祖 (1550-1616). Born in Linchuan 臨川 County, Jiangxi 江西 province, Tang was a well-known playwright, who wrote a series of plays that involve dreams, that is, The Story of Handan (Handan ji 邯鄲記), The Story of the Purple Hairpin (Zichai ji 紫釵記), The Story of Nanke (Nanke ji 南柯記) and The Peony Pavilion.  Later critics referred to these four plays collectively as Four Dreams of Linchuan (Linchuan simeng 臨川四夢). The Peony Pavilion is the most famous and widely performed of these plays. In the Ming and the Qing dynasty, many scenes from the play were excerpted in major drama miscellanies; in the modern era, the play has garnered national and international recognition for its author and for traditional Chinese theater more generally.
        
Among recent adaptations, one of the most influential renditions is the so-called “Youth Edition” (Qingchun ban 青春版) named for the intended target audience. The driving force behind this production was Pai Hsien-yung 白先勇 (1937- ), an acclaimed novelist and Kunqu aficionado. The eighth child of Kuomintang general Pai Chung-his 白崇禧 (1893-1966), Pai was born in Guilin 桂林, Guangxi 廣西 province, but moved to Taipei with his family in 1952 after the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949). He earned an MFA at the acclaimed Iowa Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa and later taught Chinese literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara until his retirement in 1994. 
        
Bai’s understanding of Kunqu is centered around the notion of beauty. This principle also informs his adaptation of The Peony Pavilion. A salient difference between his “Youth Edition” and previous adaptations lies in Pai’s incorporation of “beauty” into every aspect of the production, including script conception, actor selection, musical composition, choreography, and staging. For instance, Pai claimed that his editing of the original playtext involved “streamlining without rewriting (zhi shan bu gai 只删不改)” in an effort to preserve and showcase the elegance of the original language. 

Shen Fengying 沈豐英 (Du Liniang) and Yu Jiulin 俞玖林 (Liu Mengmei) were chosen as the two main actors in the “Youth Edition” (see fig. 1). Both actors had had some training in Kunqu performance at professional drama schools, but Pai Hsien-yung primarily selected them for their physical charm and stage appeal. Importantly, neither actor had been trained in Kunqu performance from a young age in a professional setting as is customary for members of established Kunqu troupes.
        
In a controversial revival of dynastic practices, after joining the “Youth Edition” production group, Shen Fengying and Yu Jiulin were formally inducted as the disciples of renowned Kunqu masters Zhang Jiqing 張繼青 and Wang Shiyu 汪世瑜, respectively. Zhang Jiqing is particularly known for her performances of young noble lady roles (dan 旦) in the scenes “Startled from the Dream” (Jingmeng 驚夢) and “Retracing the Dream” (Xunmeng 尋夢) from The Peony Pavilion as well as “Delusion” (Chimeng 痴夢) from Lanke Mountain (Lanke shan 爛柯山), earning her the nickname “Zhang Sanmeng” 張三夢 (Zhang Three Dreams). Similarly, Wang Shiyu is a popular “secondary young male” (xiaosheng 小生) actor known for his impressive singing skills and his gesture-dances, which have earned him the title of the leading luminary among xiaosheng actors (jinsheng kuishou 巾生魁首).

In short, while attempting to keep the essence of Tang’s text, Pai and his collaborators sought to appeal to younger audiences by casting young and pretty actors in the main roles, adding orchestral background music, and redesigning group dances, stage props, and costumes. These visual changes, according to Pai and his team, enabled the audience to intuitively appreciate the beauty of Kunqu as a stage art. To bring about his aesthetic vision, Pai spearheaded an unprecedented collaboration between different Kunqu troupes within China as well as between academics and creative artists, composers, and musicians from China and Taiwan respectively to produce the “Youth Edition.”

PLOT SUMMARY

In keeping with the conventions of chuanqi drama, Tang Xianzu’s text, while recounting the love story between Liu Mengmei and Du Liniang, interweaves that story within other plot threads that involve agriculture, officialdom, and warfare. Meanwhile, the “Youth Edition” focuses on the love story to the exclusion of other plotlines.  
        
Collaborating with Prof. Hua Wei 華瑋 (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Prof. Chang Shu-hsing 張淑香 (National Taiwan University), and Prof. Xin Yiyun 辛意雲 (Taipei National University of the Arts), condensed the original script of 55 scenes into a 27-scene play, running for approximately 8 hours on stage. In most tour performances, the 3-day performance was divided into three parts, all of which underlined the main thread that Pai aspired to bring out, that is the importance of “love” (qing 情). The three segments were respectively entitled, 1) love in dreams; (2) love between humans and ghosts; and (3) love in the earthly realm.
        
As experts and scholars in Chinese literature and drama, Professors Hua, Chang and Xin worked together with Pai to preserve the most important expressions of qing while streamlining other elements. As a result, the 27-scene “Youth Edition” made only minor changes to the story line itself, while seeking to give equal billing to the two main protagonists. Deleted content included outdated references and allusions as well as graphic expressions and sexual innuendo in comic scenes. (Li, 2005) Meanwhile, in order to foreground the love story between the two main protagonists, the “Youth Edition” shortened the dialogue for supporting characters and rendered it in plain language (Zhang, Huang, 2010). However, despite its compactness, the “Youth Edition” retained two scenes devoted to Liu Mengmei, namely “Moored at Huai’an” (Huai bo 淮泊)” and “Interrogation under the Rod” (Yingkao 硬拷). Furthermore, this version also highlighted Liu Mengmei’s “garden tour” in the scene “The Portrait Recovered” (Shi hua 拾畫), an echo of Du Liniang’s famous garden scenes “Startled from the Dream,” (Jingmeng 驚夢) and “Retracing the Dream” (Xunmeng 尋夢). Such mirroring reflects the “Youth Edition’s” attempt to make the male protagonist (Liu Mengmei) as important as the female one (Du Liniang). 

The staging was also modified in line with such a refined sense of aesthetics. For example, in the original “Resurrection” (Hui sheng 回生) scene, in response to finding herself newly exhumed, Du Liniang had acted out certain bodily reactions  like being averse to light. By contrast, in the “Youth Edition,” Du Liniang’s resurrection is an elegant affair where she is surrounded by flower spirits.      

THEME: How to Express Love within the Theatrical Language of Kunqu

The video clips listed below are arranged around the representation of “qing” (“love”) in the “Youth Edition” of The Peony Pavilion. How is the emotion of “qing” encoded in Kunqu performance? In popular modern romantic dramas or movies, the main characters often convey their love through actions such as kisses, gazing, holding hands, etc. However, in Kunqu, these direct, realistic interactions are expressed by alternative means. The following video clips primarily explore the stage language of love. In other words, they show how the intangible emotion of “qing” is manifested through stage actions, physical movements, props, and vocal performances such as solo singing and choral singing.

Bodily Movements

Physical Contact (Body) [27:17-27:25]


This clip is extracted from the iconic scene “Startled from the Dream.” In this scene, Du Liniang roams around in the garden, while Du Bao, her father, is away on official business. With its profusion of blooming flowers, the garden sparks Liniang’s romantic imagination. As she languidly begins to nap, she sees a young and handsome scholar, who holds out a willow branch to her and asks her to write a poem. In the dreamscape of the garden, they become quickly enamored of each other.
        
The first encounter between Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei is a memorable moment in the play. The two characters physically feel each other’s shoulders before they even have a chance to look into each other’s eyes. The bump is as light as falling petals, but also as heavy as the beating heart of someone falling in love. 
        
This stage action is not unique to the “Youth Edition.” In many versions of The Peony Pavilion, the two characters meet in this way. However, due to Pai’s casting choices, the two leading actors of the “Youth Edition” embodied the idea of two young lovers falling in love particularly well. The physical contact serves two functions: it creates a sense of intimacy and emphasizes the importance of their first encounter. This is the encounter that Liniang has been longing for when she was consumed by self-pity.
        
The “bump” or collision in this scene serves as a turning point in Liniang’s emotional journey. It has to be a palpable bump to confirm that the man is not just a figment of her imagination, and yet it also has to be succinct enough to delicately convey her interest to the audience.

In Kunqu, sleeves are often considered an extension of the actor’s body. In this scene from the play, during their first meeting, Liniang behaves with caution and shyness, while Liu Mengmei gently touches her sleeve and picks it up, as if touching her arms and hands. The sleeve movements make Liu Mengmei’s expression of his deep affection for Liniang and his desire for greater intimacy with her more delicate, creating an ambiguous space for the expression of love.

While Wang Shiyu, one of the performance instructors for the “Youth Edition,” contributed the iconography of the sleeves, the “Youth Edition” rendition nevertheless consistently emphasizes the softness and beauty of long sleeves in an effort to create a perfect aesthetic world. 

Physical Contact (Hands 1) [06:45-07:00]


In the scene “Union in the Shades” (You gou 幽媾), Du Liniang, a restless ghost, hears Liu Mengmei’s calls for her. Stirred, Liniang sneaks into his room. 
        
Their meeting resembles their first encounter. That is, they touch each other’s hands before looking at each other. There is also an obvious action of opening their eyes and looking directly into each other’s eyes. The music reaches a higher note as they stand on their tiptoes and make eye contact.
        
This is their “first glance” the second time around. However, the physical contact of their hands has multiple functions this time. It first illustrates the darkness of the night when eyesight is less reliable than touch. It also suggests an acknowledgment of their physical desire, which prompts the two young characters to fall in love once more.

Physical Contact (Hands 2) [37:43-38:05]


In this scene from The Peony Pavilion, after spending an intimate night together, Liu Mengmei and Du Liniang have several interactions with their bare hands. However, when they walk down the stairs to the center of the stage, Liu Mengmei grasps Liniang’s wrist covered by her sleeve rather than directly holding her hand.
        
This physical contact between their bodies, sleeves, and hands implies an increased intimacy between the two characters. It shows that their relationship has deepened and that they are becoming more physically and emotionally connected. The use of sleeves and wrists instead of hands also adds a sense of delicacy and restraint to the scene, highlighting Liniang’s reserve and shyness and Mengmei’s considerate treatment.

Eye Contact

Hiding from the Other’s Sight [28:00-28:17; 28:40-28:50]



These two video clips are taken from the first meeting scene in The Peony Pavilion. In the first clip, Liniang fluctuates between looking straight at Liu Mengmei and hiding behind her sleeve. In the second clip, Liniang makes a more explicit attempt to hide her face from Liu Mengmei.
        
While the act of “hiding” itself could be an echo of the behavioral norms for a gentry girl, the way in which Liniang oscillates between hiding herself and looking at Liu Mengmei suggests that she struggles to channel her feelings of affection. Her desire for love is so strong that she becomes bold enough to violate proper decorum. Later in the story, this same desire is strong enough for her to defy the boundary of life and death.

Looking at Each Other’s Eyes [30:15-30:33]

On the stage, eye contact is another common strategy for expressing love. In this scene, the characters soulfully gaze into each other's eyes. As the camera zooms in on their faces, narrative time is extended. While they dance, their eyes nevertheless remain fixed on each other.

Looking at a Self-portrait [3:05-4:00]

In the scene “Union in the Shades” (You gou 幽媾),” Liu Mengmei imagines the scene when Liniang drew her self-portrait that he had found in the garden. Liu Mengmei’s gaze lingers on the painting during his soliloquy.
        
However, since the painting is hanging on a wall, he has to turn his back toward the audience, which deviates from stage convention where actors typically face the audience. This action, however, underscores his obsession with Du Liniang.

Flower Deities [34:30-37:40]

In Kunqu, the love-making scene is usually represented in a subtle way. Typically, the two main characters will exit together; by the time they return on stage, the erotic scene will have already concluded (Chen 1998).

In The Peony Pavilion, flower deities (花神, huashen) take the role of narrator. After Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei leave the stage, the flower deities come out and with their dancing evoke the intimacy between the two lovers in a poetic and metaphorical manner. Along with the dance, the flower deities also sing a chorus song, whose lyrics indicate the consummation of the union between the two protagonists. The transitional scene of the flower deities allows the audience to imagine the lovemaking, while adding a dreamy and ethereal atmosphere to the play.

Major Characters’ Chorus [31:12-34:00]

The two major characters, Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei, also engage in joint choral singing. For example, after Liu Mengmei expresses his affection and desire to be with Du Liniang, Du Liniang subtly conveys her agreement by joining Liu’s singing. This kind of joint singing serves as a way for the two characters to express their love and commitment to each other.
